Many women of all ages who have extremely large heavy breasts (hypermastia) that cause shoulder pain, neck pain, back pain, bra-strap grooving and rashes underneath the breasts with heat typically consider having a breast reduction cosmetic surgery to relieve these symptoms and are extremely pleased with the result. By removing the extra fat and tissue this can greatly improve the pains and discomforts that come with having very large heavy breasts.
To see Dr. Brown for a breast reduction you need to obtain a referral from your family doctor or a walk-in clinic as this is a benefit of the Medical Services Plan if a minimum amount of tissue is taken out of the breast.
As a breast reduction is a benefit of the Medical Services Plan the surgery is done at the Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre, located minutes off of highway 1 and an hour outside of Vancouver, BC.
As a breast reduction is a benefit of the Medical Services Plan, there is no charge for you. The only extra cost to you would be if Dr. Brown suggests liposuction of the lateral chest walls performed at the same time as the breast reduction. As this is not a benefit of the Medical Services Plan, Dr. Brown will give you a quote for this is if he thinks you would be a candidate for the liposuction.
The surgery typically takes 60 minutes and is done under a general anesthetic. You can expect to be at the hospital anywhere from 5-6 hours.
Patients typically back to normal routine 4-6 weeks after surgery. You will see Dr. Brown three days after your surgery to remove the drains and seven days after that to remove stitches. Patients are usually feeling better just after a couple weeks.
As we do have a shorter waitlist and more operating time at the hospital you can expect to get a call anywhere from 4-6 months after your consultation offering you a surgical date.
