What is Breast Implant Explantation?

Breast implant explantation is the surgical removal of previously inserted breast implants, often combined with a breast lift (mastopexy) or revision of surrounding tissue. With Dr Aaron Brown, explantation is executed with precision and care, enabling patients to transition away from implants while preserving breast contour, symmetry and aesthetic harmony.

Why Would Someone Undergo Breast Implant Explantation?

The reasons to undergo breast implant explantation vary and may include: implant-related complications (capsular contracture, leakage, or rupture), changes in personal preference, health concerns (BIA-ALCL or other implant-related conditions), or desire to return to a natural breast profile.

  • Improved breast shape after removal when combined with a lift, achieving natural and proportionate contours
  • Peace of mind from working with a surgeon experienced in both implant and explant procedures

Who are the Ideal Candidates for Explantation?

Ideal candidates for explantation with Dr Brown include individuals who:

  • Have existing implants and wish to remove them for health, lifestyle, or aesthetic reasons
  • Are in good overall health, with stable weight and non-smokers (or people willing to stop) for optimal healing
  • Understand that revision often includes additional procedures (lift, reshaping) and have realistic expectations about scarring and recovery
  • Are committed to post-surgical care, as proper follow-up and lifestyle adaptation maintain the best results

Consultation Process

In your one-on-one consultation, Dr Brown will review your medical history, examine existing implants, tissue quality, and expectations. He will advise whether full removal, replacement, or removal and lift is best for you. A detailed plan is provided, including incision strategy, anesthetic plan, expected result, and recovery timeline.

Once your consultation is complete, you will receive a detailed quote for breast explant surgery, valid for six months. This estimate will include Dr. Brown’s surgical fee, the clinic fee, the anesthetist, and all follow-up visits. Please note that post-operative medications for at-home use and pathology fees for out-of-region testing are not included.

Recovery Process and Timeline

Post-operative recovery involves initial soreness, swelling, and limited arm movement for the first few days. Most patients return to light activity in 1–2 weeks, but it is important to avoid heavy lifting and chest exercises for at least 4–6 weeks. Dr Brown will schedule follow-up visits to monitor healing and to guide scar management. Final breast shape settles over 3–6 months.

After-Care Instructions

  • Wear a supportive surgical bra or garment as instructed, typically 24/7 for the first 2 weeks
  • Sleep on your back with your upper body elevated to reduce swelling
  • Avoid smoking, as it delays healing and increases complication risk
  • Avoid chest workouts, heavy lifting or pushing/pulling for at least 6 weeks (or as directed)
  • Attend all follow-up visits to monitor healing, scar maturation and final outcome

Breast Implant Explantation Surgery Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the surgery performed?

Dr. Brown performs breast implant removal surgery at a private surgical centre in the Lower Mainland, BC. For patients travelling from out of town, including Calgary, Edmonton, and beyond, Abbotsford has an airport conveniently located nearby.

How long is the surgery?

Breast explant surgery typically takes a minimum of 90 minutes under general anaesthesia. Expect to be at the surgical facility for approximately 3 to 6 hours in total.

Is this covered by the Medical Services Plan?

Unless your implants are ruptured and associated with Baker Grade IV capsular contracture, removing breast implants is not covered by the Medical Services Plan. To explore coverage, you must obtain a referral from your family physician.

What is all done during the surgery?

Dr. Brown aims to perform a complete capsulectomy when it is safe to do so. During the breast implant removal procedure, he will take photographs of the implants and capsules for your medical records. If fluid is present, it will be sent for cytology. The implant pocket is irrigated with multiple antibacterial solutions to reduce the risk of infection.

Will you test the Capsule for Breast Implant-Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (BIA-ALCL)?

Yes. All implant capsules are sent to a pathologist for analysis to rule out BIA-ALCL during breast explant surgery.

How Much Does Breast Implant Explantation Cost?

Dr. Brown will provide a detailed cost breakdown during your consultation, as pricing depends on the specific procedure. On average, breast explant surgery costs approximately $14,000 plus GST.
